Hamilton's letters to his wife, mostly written during various trips to England, relate to domestic and family matters, including the purchase of furniture and livestock, horticultural matters and their garden at Hamwood. He describes a visit to his wife's relative Sarah Ponsonby at her home in Llangollen enroute to Yorkshire, where he viewed the gardens and conservatory at Wentworth House, Yorkshire (October 1823).
