Tighe, Hamilton and Howard Papers,

1737-1919.

Contains the correspondence of various members of the Tighe family of Rossana, Co. Wicklow and Caroline Hamilton (née Tighe) of Hamwood, Co. Meath, and their relations among the Ponsonby, Crosbie and Blachford families, among them Sarah Ponsonby, later of Llangollen, Wales, Theodosia Blachford and her daughter the poet Mary Tighe. Also included is the correspondence of members of the Howard family of Shelton, Co. Wicklow, including the Hon. Mrs. Sarah Howard (née Hamilton), whose sons Charles and Cecil succeeded as 5th and 6th Earls of Wicklow respectively, her husband the Hon. Rev. Francis Howard, vicar of Swords, and their daughters Ladies Caroline, Louisa and Alice Howard. In addition these papers contain some legal and financial papers of the Howard family, relating to their properties and an unsuccessful challenge to Charles Howard's succession to the title circa 1870.

Description:In their letters to each other Ponsonby and Tighe refer to politics, mutual family and friends, with particular reference to Ponsonby's partner Lady Eleanor Butler. Tighe, writing from London and her home at Rossana, Co. Wicklow, refers to attempts to reconcile Butler with her parents (1774), her sending Ponsonby books, her hopes of visiting her in Wales (she eventually did so some time before Dec 1799), the birth of babies, her thoughts on Irish servants and Catholics and renovation work to Rossana; she also describes events in Co. Wicklow during the 1798 Rebellion, with particular reference to the activities of the United Irish leader Joseph Holt. Ponsonby refers her changes to her garden at Llangollen (13 Sept 1791), the death of her friend the writer Elizabeth Bowdler (11 July 1797)and the artistic abilities of Tighe's children.
Included is an attached note, compiled by Caroline Hamilton, concerning Ponsonby's correspondence with her mother Sarah Tighe.
