Letter from Charles Henry Locke, New Jersey, to his brother John Locke, Dublin, informing him that he has deserted the Confederate Army,
1863 May 4.
Describes how he deserted the Confederate Army: "On the 12th of last March I was one of the guard escorting fifteen Union deserters from Port Hudson to Jackson in Mississippi. On the third day of the march, I deserted. The distance to Baton Rouge was 80 miles. I was six days and a half in the woods. Had two thousand cavalry and a brigade of infantry to get through. I often looked out of the woods and counted the cavalry and infantry pickets. I never felt so thankful to God as when I got inside the United States lines, at Baton Rouge, where I surrendered to one of the pickets. I am a Union man and never belonged to them. I was twice wounded, in the face by a splinter and in the leg by a shell."
