Writes that he has been six months in the Confederate Army and in the midst of war: "the Yankees are in our front. The Turkey Buzzard hovers in our rear. We will have desperate fighting in a few days. They are almost ten to one against us. Our men are in good spirits. We are well clad and well fed. I give this letter to the Revd. Le Goodrich, Episcopalian Minister in Orleans, when communications opens to be posted after the war ... The way we take the oath is by holding up the hand and repeating the words after the captain. I belong to the Planters Life Guards my company is called the Butler Avengers & Captain MacKay commanding officer."
