Letter from Charles Henry Locke, St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada, to his brother John Locke, Dublin, about his ambition to leave Canada and head south,
[1860] July 30.
Mentions his intention to take his daughter with him: "My intention is to go to South to St. Louis. I intend to send for my daughter from Detroit and take her with me. I think I would feel happy under any circumstance if I had her near me. I feel these last seven or eight years as if I was left alone in the world. I intend to get her a situation in some respectable family. I have been calculating a good deal about calling on the governor. It would cost me considerable for cloths and going from here to Montreal, and then perhaps have to wait there until my money was all spent. Then I would be in for another winter in Canada. I would prefer death sooner than spend another winter in Canada."
