John Pitt Kennedy had an extensive engineering and military career in India. Between 1849-1850, he served as military secretary to Sir Charles Napier; from about 1850 he acted as Consultant Enginner to the Indian Government and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the East Indies in 1853. He also published numerous works concerning construction of railways and roads, as well as British relations, in India.
